joe johns has been talking about his law enforcement sources. joe, what have you been learning about what other cities are doing specifically in response to today's bombings? >> obviously, as you said, boston is taking the lead, erin. the federal response has been enormous. the fbi, which takes the lead role in terrorism investigations, flooding that city with an enormous presence, dealing with an enormous crime scene. then we have the bureau of alcohol, tobacco and firearms sending in every available person. they've activated their national response team. canine handlers and so on. most everyone we've spoken with, as you said, at first glance didn't think these devices were very sophisticated, but were very powerful. investigators are trying to figure out what they can find from the arc of the explosion, the agent used in the explosion. whether it was homegrown or international terrorism. but across the country, these explosions in boston usualered in a cold wind. a bunch of cities taking precautions. new york city beefing up security. police i

for one, the law doesn't even cover him because he's a u.s. citizen. but from a law enforcement national security perspective, what better way to minimize the impact of terrorists than to treat them like criminals. that's what they are. if you make them into sort of a bigger deal than he is or anyone is, it sort of gives them a relevance we actually don't want to. so a lot of people in national security and counterterrorism love this idea. not only because of the legal underpinnings behind it but also because it sort of says to anyone who would harm us, you're just a criminal. >> there has also been a lot of successful prosecutions of terrorist suspects in criminal court. >> you can learn a lot of evidence from this. when i first got into this field it was right after the africa bombings, african embassy bombings in '98, and some of the testimony that came out of that really taught us a lot about bin laden, about his rise within islamic jihadism and you can learn a lot out of it. what we don't know is whether he has anything to teach us. that's the one

this was from law enforcement agencies, a law enforcement bulletin given to other investigators and all police in the area to be on the lookout for what they're describing as someone who is dark kskinned, possibly a foreign accent. they have no suspects in custody at this time. this person might have been carrying a black backpack and wearing a sweatshirt and may have been trying to get into the restricted area around where the blast went off before the explosion happened. now doctors are also, according to our sources and information learned by colleagues, are removing ball bearings from some of the people being treated, one of the victims at one of the local 4078hospitals there. this could indicate what the explosive devices were made of. it's described as screwed and sometimes small. there were said to be at least two unexploded devices. my sources are telling me one of the things they're doing, john, are to pick those apart. they would to get the dna evidence for the way they were constructed. as of now, no one is making any claim that we are aware of, claiming responsibility for th
